How to See Namibia in Style with a Mobile Safari

By namibiatt|February 28, 2020

People who’ve never been on an African safari before might imagine trudging through hot, isolated expanses of brush and desert, hoping to glimpse an elephant or a giraffe from miles away.

While getting in the weeds to come face-to-face with exotic wildlife can be a rush, the safaris that we host at Namibia Tracks & Trails are far more comfortable than what you might have in mind.

To be clear, you’ll still get up close and personal with Namibia’s wildlife offerings — we just let you do it in style.

Many of our packages offerings are mobile safaris, which means we bring you to the best locations across Namibia for spotting elephants, rhinos, giraffes, flamingos, and many more species.

What Is a Mobile Safari?

A mobile safari is another term for a tented safari tour. Guests and guides travel together from camp to camp in off-road vehicles or small aircraft, allowing you to take the road less traveled.

It’s the best way to explore the far-flung corners of Namibia, beyond the tourist hot spots and into the remote treasures of the back country.

But traveling through remote locations doesn’t mean you have to give up the amenities of civilization. Our camps are staffed with gourmet chefs and feature fully-stocked bars, swimming pools, lounges, Wi-Fi, electricity, and hot water.

Some of the best things about a tented safari tour include:

  • Diversity: Visit multiple locations with varying ecosystems and wildlife species
  • Friendship: Traveling with the same group allows you to get to know your guides better and make lifelong friends with other guests
  • Exploration: Get off the main roads and deep into the Namibian backcountry
  • Intimate Wildlife Viewing: Camps are established in prime viewing locations next to watering holes and other areas popular with wildlife, which means you can watch elephants take a bath while you sip a glass of wine!
  • Value: See more in less time — a better value for your dollar

The journey continues from Damaraland into Kaokoveld’s Hoanib River Valley, where you’ll have more opportunities to see elephant, black rhino, desert-adapted lions, and more plains game.

The first 4 days of this tour are the same as the Desert Elephant & Black Rhino tour, but we continue on to take you much deeper into the Namibian bush.

We guide you through several traditional Himba villages, and you’ll have the opportunity to see Ovahimba herdsmen working with their stock.

Eventually, you’ll reach the Kunene River and the epic Epupa Falls at the Namibia-Angola border. Relax in the presence of the falls, or go for a refreshing dip!

Near the end of the tour, you’ll travel through Etosha West and the Ongava Private Game Reserve, where you’ll be able to see some unique species, including aardvark, cape fox, bat-eared fox, aardwolf, genet, and many more.

This tour takes the middle section of the Discover Kaokoland tour and turns it into a shorter package for guests who want to see Epupa Falls and get a chance to meet the nomadic Ovahimba people.

Namibia Northeast Camping Experience
11 days / 10 nights – Ground Travel

This tour is totally different from all the others we’ve explored so far. The northeastern part of Namibia is particularly lush, standing in stark contrast to the country’s mostly desert climate.

Starting in the Otavi Mountain Region, you’ll see the largest meteorite in the southern hemisphere, which crashed into this area over 80,000 years ago!

The adventure then travels through Khaudum National Park, the Mahango Game Reserve, and Bwabwata National Park, spending multiple days in each.

Because of a proliferation of watering holes in this area, guests can expect to witness many wildlife species, including:

  • Elephants
  • Predator game such as lion and cheetah
  • Many species of birds including raptors
  • Sable and roan antelopes
  • Wildebeest
  • Water buffalo
  • Kudu
  • Giraffe
  • Wild dogs
  • Red lechwe
  • Waterbuck
  • Hippos

This may be the best of all our tours for seeing the widest variety of Namibian wildlife.

Hoanib Valley Camp & Shipwreck Lodge
5 Days / 4 Nights – Air & Ground Travel

Fly into Sesfontein and then take a short car ride begin this tour at our Hoanib Valley Camp. This package brings you to the northwestern part of Namibia, which is most famous for its coastal area, known as the Skeleton Coast.

But don’t worry — the only thing scary about the Skeleton Coast is how much fun you’ll have. The travel between the Hoanib Valley in the Kaokoveld to the Skeleton Coast will allow you to see elephants, giraffes, springboks, oryx and even lions.

Once you reach the coast, you can visit a colony of seals at Möwe Bay. Then don your pirate hat to spy shipwrecks dotted along the coast, and search for treasure in an abandoned diamond mine!

The end of this tour will have exploring dunes or relaxing on the beach before heading back to real life.

This truly luxurious experience forgoes ground travel and treats you to Namibia’s breathtaking beauty by air, flying from camp to camp in a small aircraft.

From the dunes of the Sossuveli and the calming Hoanib Valley to the austere Skeleton Coast and richly biodiverse Etosha Heights, this tour does it all. You’ll see all the animals described in our other tours and more, because this tour includes a day-cruise in Walvis Bay on Namibia’s Atlantic coast.

The species you’ll possibly encounter on this 3-hour cruise include:

Fly-Drive Combo
14 Days / 13 Nights – Air & Ground Travel

This is the longest and most thorough of all our tour packages. To see it all, you’ll travel by both aircraft and off-road vehicles.

The travel will take you through the Okonjima Nature Reserve, the Onguma Game Reserve, the Ongava Private Game Reserve, Twyfelfontein, the Namib Dunes, and the Sossuvlei.

The Okonjima Nature Reserve is one of the standouts of this tour. The area gives guests the opportunity to encounter baboons and leopards, as well as a mind-boggling array of other species, from African hornbills and zebra to pangolin and leopard tortoises.

The other star of this package is the time spent in the UNESCO World Heritage Site Twyfelfontein, which translates to “Doubtful Spring.” This valley is covered in thousands of ancient petroglyphs dating as far back as 10,000 years.

As you survey eons of history in the rock carvings of animals and their tracks, you’ll swear you can feel the beating heart of Africa.

This package also includes the Walvis Bay cruise described in the Selective Namibia Fly-In Package.

Spread Your Wings
9 days / 8 nights – Air Travel

This tour takes a section of the Fly-Drive Combo package and turns it into a slightly shorter adventure, focused on the Twyfelfontein and Ongava and Onkonjima Reserves.

You’ll take scenic flights over the white clay plan of the Sossuvlei and its adjacent red dunes, along the coast over Conception Bay and the lagoon at Sandwich Harbour, and more.

A highlight of this tour is time spent in the desert town of Swakopmund, when you’ll have the chance to relish in its old-world charm.

Whatever African safari tour you choose, you’re bound to have an amazing experience you will never forget. Between the jaw-dropping landscapes, mouthwatering meals, and iconic wildlife, you’ll be planning your next safari before the first is even over.
