Culture & Wildlife in North-eastern Namibia

Arrival at Hosea Kutako (Windhoek International) airport, where you will be met by your guide. Subsequent drive in a northerly direction via Okahandja to Okonjima, home of the AfriCat Foundation, a non-profit organisation dedicated to the conservation and protection of Namibian wild cats, in particular leopard and cheetah.

Enjoy the opportunity to admire and photograph these predators during the afternoon activity.

We are proceeding in a northerly direction via the Hoba Meteorite to Fiume Bush Lodge, where you can have a glimpse into the lives of the ancient San people during the bushman walk tomorrow.

The largest known meteorite ever to hit the planet is thought to have done so approximately 80,000 years ago, when it landed in a remote part of Namibia. It was only unearthed many centuries later in 1920, when a farmer tilling his fields stumbled upon it. It was excavated but not transported, due to its stupendous weight of approximately 60 tons, and today can still be viewed at the original site of its discovery. Thought to be between 200 and 400 million years old, it is the biggest organic chunk of iron known to man, but also contains traces of substances which do not occur naturally on earth. It measures roughly three metres by three metres, with an average thickness of approximately one metre.

Today you can expect the most informal, liberating learning experience about the San people, their history, lifestyle and culture.

You can look forward to a bush walk, village life, making of tools, jewellery and weapons. You will also learn how the San people start a fire, how and what to use as medicines and the different roles of men and women in the community.

We are travelling further north via Rundu to the Popa Falls at Bagani. We visit one of the traditional Kavango villages, before we continue to Mahangu Lodge.

Enjoy the scenery on a sundowner boat cruise on the Okavango River late this afternoon.

We are going on game viewing excursions today in the nearby Mahango National Park.

Excellent game viewing, i.e. red lechwe, sable, hippos, elephants, crocodiles and the usual plains game as well as birding can be experienced.

Today’s destination is the beautiful Lianshulu Lodge, which offers the opportunity to experience a wild and untouched island in the remote Kwando River.

Here you bid farewell to your guide to continue the rest of your journey on F/I services from the lodge.

From Lianshulu you undertake game expeditions in open 4×4 vehicles in the Mudumu National Park.

Game sightings in this river cradle could include vast herds of roaming elephant and buffalo, lions, hippos, leopards, sable, roan, lechwe and puku.

There is outstanding bird watching in this area in a variety of riverine, floodplain and grassland habitats.

Boating, nature walks, picnics or infinite relaxation in the cool respite of Lianshulu Lodge are all possible; so be sure to chat to the lodge reception to book such activities.

Today you cross the border to Botswana. Your destination is the Chobe Bush Lodge, which is situated in Kasane directly on the border of Chobe National Park and within 150 metres from the Chobe River.

Along with many species of big game, Chobe National Park boasts the largest concentration of elephant in Africa and the game drives and boat cruises here offer visitors the opportunity to witness this spectacle.
